The average rifle stock with a cheek piece needs 2-2 ¼" in thickness in the butt. However, most shotguns are only about 1.6" thick at the end of the butt and at the action area. They are even thinner elsewhere. This means many one-sided stocks will make gorgeous shotgun blanks on both sides.
